Laurel, Miss. – The South Mississippi Fair is set to return next month, bringing rides, food, and games to the community. Following a shooting incident at last year’s fair, security measures are being significantly enhanced to ensure a safe environment for all attendees.

Enhanced Security Measures

According to Joey Davis, owner of Protec Security, all visitors will be required to pass through metal detectors as a standard procedure. “That’s what they’re made to do: to detect any type of firearm on the person when they walk through,” Davis stated. The intent is to maintain crowd flow while ensuring safety.

Clear Bag Policy Adjustments

The fair will continue its clear bag policy with slight modifications. Non-clear bags, unless they are diaper bags accompanied by a child, will not be permitted. “Diaper bags will be accepted as long as they’re checked,” Davis added.

Law Enforcement Presence

Local law enforcement will maintain a strong presence throughout the fairgrounds. “Each gate will have a police officer, and on the midway, you’ll have at least 8 or 10 in uniform,” Davis mentioned. Additionally, undercover officers will also be monitoring the event.

Davis expressed hope that attendees will focus on enjoying the fair. “That’s all I want you to worry about—what vendor or food you’re going to get next,” he said. “The fair board cares about providing a good time.”

The South Mississippi Fair will run from October 17-25, with presale tickets available online starting October 1. Tickets will be priced at $6 at the gate.
