Officers at a Mississippi correctional facility disrupted a potential early Christmas for inmates by seizing illegal substances and contraband, including marijuana, cell phones, and barbequed chicken wings. According to officials from the Mississippi Department of Corrections, officers at the South Mississippi Correctional Institute near Leakesville received an alert at 1:30 a.m. on Monday, triggered by advanced sensing technology, regarding items thrown over a remote section of the prison’s fence.
Contraband Details and Security Measures
The unidentified smugglers managed to throw over 25 packages, with some items concealed inside footballs to navigate the double 18-foot fences. In total, officers recovered 38 cellphones, four pounds of marijuana, several packs of cigarettes, and 20 pounds of tobacco along with rolling papers. Law enforcement is currently conducting a search for the smugglers’ vehicle based on descriptions gathered by the officers.
Deputy Commissioner of Institutions Jeworski Mallett emphasized that enhanced security measures are proving effective against contraband smuggling operations. “Clearly, we’re making a dent because smugglers on the outside are taking extreme risks to assist inmates in engaging in illegal activities,” Mallett stated. He noted plans to reopen perimeter guard towers staffed with marksmen equipped with high-powered rifles to further secure the facility.
Impact on Inmates and Public Safety
Any inmate implicated in the smuggling attempt will face consequences, including loss of eligibility for early release and potential time added to their sentence. This crackdown is part of a broader initiative to enhance safety within Mississippi’s prisons, as highlighted by Commissioner Burl Cain. The use of contraband by gang leaders to control inmate populations poses significant risks, and efforts are underway to dismantle these operations.
“We’re installing the latest security systems, deploying drones, and utilizing cameras and scanners throughout the facilities,” said Cain. He added that recruiting qualified individuals from criminal justice programs is part of efforts to modernize Mississippi Corrections. “Governor Tate Reeves encourages us to bring Mississippi Corrections into the 21st century, and we are committed to that goal.”
Context of Recent Seizures
This incident marks the third significant interception of illegal activities within Mississippi’s prisons, as evidenced by records from the Clarion Ledger. Officials previously dismantled a smuggling ring in October and executed a successful raid on the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman that same month. Such efforts are critical as Mississippi navigates its evolving relationship with the cannabis industry amidst ongoing conversations about regulation and safety.
