Monday is 4/20, the unofficial weed holiday, but residents of Indiana face legal restrictions in celebrating. Indiana is one of only nine states where recreational marijuana remains prohibited. As of 2025, data from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) shows that 24 states and Washington, D.C. allow for recreational use, including neighboring states like Illinois and Michigan.

The Trump Administration’s attempts last year to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous substance have yet to influence Indiana’s laws. Two legislative proposals aimed at changing this—House Bill 1298, introduced by Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour), and House Bill 1191, proposed by Rep. Mitch Gore (D-Indianapolis)—failed to advance during the 2026 session. Additionally, the state legislature once again did not regulate or ban marijuana-adjacent products like Delta 8 gummies and beverages.
