The reclassification of cannabis at the federal level could now open the door for legislatures in states where marijuana is not legal to now consider a change.
INDIANAPOLIS — There are questions about the future of marijuana laws in Indiana after the federal government moved to reclassify the drug.
On Tuesday, April 28, Gov. Mike Braun was asked where Indiana stands as that shift at the federal level could open the door to broader changes nationwide.
Braun said any conversation about the possibility of legalizing cannabis in Indiana would involve law enforcement.
The governor referenced the four states surrounding Indiana, all of which have legalized marijuana either for medicinal purposes or for both medical and recreational use.

Past legislative sessions have included proposals to legalize marijuana, but those bills have rarely received hearings.
On Tuesday, Braun said lawmakers would be a large part what happens next.
“I think the main question is, you’re going to need to ask the legislators and the leaders of those two chambers to see what they’re thinking because I’m clear in terms of where I’m at, and I think just like anything, you’ve got to take what’s evolved over time. You stick your head in the sand, you’re generally are going to make the wrong decision,” Braun said.
Braun has said before that he’s agnostic on the issue of legalizing marijuana for medical purposes but has acknowledged it’s something that will probably need to be addressed.
