ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque business is dealing with thousands in damages and stolen merchandise after thieves smashed a car into their store. There is video showing the crash and two people stealing products off the shelves. It happened at the front entrance of Dark Matter Cannabis around 3 a.m. Thursday. The store was locked, with the steel roller doors pulled down, but it was not enough to stop some very determined thieves.
In surveillance video, two people can be seen backing a car into the Albuquerque store. “They rammed into the front of the store, took out the rolling security door in the front facade of the building, and did a smash and grab, essentially just robbing some product,” said Mathew Chadwick, owner of Dark Matter Cannabis.

Staff at Black Matter Cannabis are cleaning and recovering from the burglary that left thousands in damages. “Disheartening more than anything else, but also happy that no one got harmed,” said Chadwick. It was all captured on surveillance video where you can see the driver repeatedly back their car into the front entrance. They tried three times, in between each one of them checking for witnesses.
Chadwick said the thieves took cannabis and paraphernalia products but no cash. The pair of thieves were in and out in seven minutes, both wearing masks. The front roll away door and lobby are destroyed; crews worked on blocking it off. “We reacted very quickly. Pulled all inventory off the shelves. We’re doing inventory counts to get an accurate description of what was taken, not only for the authorities but the cannabis control division,” said Chadwick.
As a man who makes his living selling cannabis, Chadwick is especially concerned about safety. “That’s obviously what we don’t want to happen in this industry with it going legal, is trying to minimize the illegality around this and make sure it’s a safe place for customers to come,” said Chadwick. Dark matter is closed hoping to reopen soon.
Dark Matter said they are planning on adding more security measures to the store like more surveillance cameras and strong roll away doors. KRQE News 13 reached out to APD to see if any suspects have been arrested and have not heard back yet. The owner of Dark Matter said they will offer a cash reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.
