Iowa Lawmaker Supporting Medical Psilocybin Bashes Bill That Would’ve Legalized Only A Synthetic Version Of The Psychedelic

Published

on

Shipley said he “condemns Compass Pathways” for its approach at creating, and patenting, a synthetic version of the “natural psilocybin that God has given us that everyone knows and loves.”

By Cami Koons, Iowa Capital Dispatch

An Iowa lawmaker who pushed for the passage of a bill to create a state program allowing the medicinal use of psilocybin said Gov. Kim Reynolds’s (R) decision to veto a bill pertaining to the psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms was a “great decision.”

Rep. Jeff Shipley (R-Fairfield) said rather than focus on rescheduling a synthetic version of the drug, the state should instead prioritize creating a state program legalizing the psychiatric use of naturally occurring psilocybin.

House File 383 would have allowed for the prescription and distribution of synthetic psilocybin immediately following federal approval of the drug, and mirrored a similar bill, which was signed into law, in Colorado.

The bill dealt with crystalline polymorph psilocybin, a compound commonly known as COMP360, which is a treatment developed by the biotechnology company Compass Pathways to help patients with treatment of resistant depression, post traumatic stress disorder and anorexia nervosa.

Shipley said he “condemns Compass Pathways” for its approach at creating, and patenting, a synthetic version of the “natural psilocybin that God has given us that everyone knows and loves.”

Compass Pathways declined to comment on the veto of the bill, which it lobbied in support of, and on Shipley’s comment.

Shipley’s emailed statement also apologized for his vote in favor of the bill, which passed unanimously in both the House and Senate.

“The proper legal framework is to reschedule psilocybin to schedule IV or III, and allow the relevant state regulatory boards to make it available as medicine,” Shipley said.

Reynolds, in her explanation of the veto, similarly said the state should have time to review any federal action on the synthetic version of the drug before it legalizes it at the state level.

Shipley was a vocal supporter of House File 978, which would have legalized the use of psilocybin for psychiatric treatment through a state program. The proposed program would have operated similarly to the state’s medical cannabis program.

The bill passed the House with an overwhelming majority in late April, but was not taken up by the Senate.

“It’s my hope and prayer that the Governor’s office and the Iowa Senate will agree to take up…HF978 as an immediate priority next January,” Shipley said.

Chicago Police Can’t Search Vehicles Based on Smell of Raw Cannabis Under New Rules

Published

on

Chicago Police Department (CDP) officers will not be allowed to search vehicles based only on the smell of raw cannabis under a rule change approved by officials on Monday, WTTW reports.

Advocates had pursued the change under a 2019 federal court order requiring the department to reform its policies, and CPD officials agreed to the rule change despite initial objections. The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois said in a Monday court filing that it “applauds” the department’s decision last month to adopt the policy change.

The change comes despite the Illinois Supreme Court ruling in 2024 that the smell of raw cannabis is sufficient grounds for police to conduct a vehicle search during a traffic stop. Three months earlier, however, the same court ruled that the smell of burnt cannabis is not sufficient grounds for searching a vehicle without a warrant.

CPD reported conducting just 70 traffic stops based on suspected cannabis violations from December 2024 to June 2025 — the department, however, does not track how many traffic stops occur based on the smell of raw cannabis, according to the report.

Adult-use cannabis is legal in Illinois; however, state law requires cannabis to be stored in a “sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant cannabis container” when being transported in a vehicle.

Tilray Brands Subsidiary is First Company in Italy Approved to Distribute Medical Cannabis Flower

Published

on

FL Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tilray Brands Inc., has become the first company in Italy to receive government approval to distribute medical cannabis flower. The products are set to be available this month in pharmacies throughout the country.

In a statement, Denise Faltischek, chief strategy officer and head of International at Tilray Brands, said the “milestone underscores the vital role of medical cannabis as a therapeutic medicine for patients in need, supporting their health and well-being.”

“We are proud to expand our medical cannabis portfolio in Italy with the introduction of our Tilray Medical high-quality, EU-GMP certified medical cannabis products that uphold the highest standards in patient care,” Faltischek said. “We extend our gratitude to the Ministero della Salute (Italian Ministry of Health) for their trust in Tilray Medical and for providing the necessary regulatory framework to ensure access to safe, consistent and reliable cannabinoid-based therapies. Together, we are advancing health care and patient wellness through innovation and collaboration.” — Faltischek in a press release

The three approved products include Tilray Medical’s Tilray THC 25%, Tilray THC 18%, and Tilray THC 9%/CBD 9%.

Italy legalized medical cannabis in 2013 and initially relied on imported medical cannabis products; however, the Italian Army was later tasked with local cultivation at the Military Pharmaceutical Plant in Florence, which was criticized for producing low quality flower.

Michigan Cannabis Sales Fall, But Consumers Are Buying More at Dispensaries

Published

on

Adult-use cannabis sales totals in Michigan declined for a fourth consecutive month in May, according to state Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) data outlined by the Detroit Metro Times. Between January and May, adult-use dispensaries in the state sold $1.31 billion worth of products, down from $1.34 billion from the same period last year.

It marks the Michigan cannabis industry’s first year-over-year decline since adult-use sales began in the state in December 2019.

The downturn is likely caused by oversupply – state data shows that dispensaries held more than 160,000 pounds of flower in April, up from 143,300 pounds the prior year – which is leading to lower prices for consumers. In May, the average price of an ounce of flower was $63, compared to $88 a year prior. When adult-use sales began in 2019, the average price for an ounce of flower was more than $500.

In turn, consumers are buying more product at dispensaries. In May, retailers sold about 20% more flower, concentrates, vape cartridges, kief, edibles, and shake, despite reporting lower sales totals.

In April, state lawmakers held a hearing about whether to impose a moratorium on new cannabis cultivators, during which Brian Hanna, director of the CRA, told the panel that without changes, the industry is “going to see consolidation.”

“You’re going to see small businesses going out of business. You’re going to see bigger buying out smaller,” she said, according to a Metro Times report. “You’re going to see lesser variety. You’re going to see social equity businesses suffer along with those businesses.”

However, under current state law, the CRA is required to issue licenses to applicants that meet the criteria, and lawmakers have not passed any moratorium.
