New Beginnings
As the co-founder of The Talon Group, a lobbying firm, and Gibbs Whitwell PLLC, a law firm, Whitwell was serving his second term as a city councilman in Jackson when he crossed paths with Tommy Moore, a life coach from Greenville, South Carolina. Inspired by principles set forth by renowned business author Ken Blanchard, Moore encouraged Whitwell to reflect deeply on his life and potential.
“Tommy spent a weekend at my home, and although I tried to impress him with my accomplishments, he candidly told my wife and me that we hadn’t reached our true potential,” Whitwell recounted. This pivotal conversation prompted the Whitwells to reassess their family and business plans, ultimately igniting a call to action for Whitwell.
A Return to Roots
Born in Memphis and raised in Oxford, Whitwell thrived academically and athletically, serving as student body president and quarterback at Oxford High School. After earning a history degree from the University of Mississippi, he entered the world of law and politics, striving for a state senate seat and eventually serving as a city councilman.
By 2014, however, Whitwell grew disillusioned with local politics amid frequent leadership changes in Jackson. This led to a unanimous family decision to relocate back to Oxford, where he acquired Life Bible Study, a Christian publishing company, and took on a role with Progressive Medical Management. His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as he redefined his career while continuing to support his family’s well-being.
Impact on the Cannabis Industry
In 2022, Whitwell sold his interest in The Talon Group and joined former Governor Ronnie Musgrove to form Musgrove Whitwell PLLC. Together, they ventured into the cannabis sector, establishing Magnolia Tech Labs to evaluate cannabis safety for Mississippi’s medical marijuana initiative. This alignment with emerging cannabis legislation underscores the growing impact of cannabis policies on local economies, offering new opportunities in the state.
Whitwell’s mission extends to revitalizing rural hospitals through his role as CEO of Progressive Health Group LLC.
