Trevor Kinney has lived in Mississippi all his life, and months after the legalization of medical marijuana in his home state, he finds it hard to believe. “No, I thought we’d be one of the last ones to do it,” he remarked. “I was genuinely surprised.”
In a potential development for the local cannabis industry, Gautier city council members are set to vote on a proposal to convert a building on Ladnier Road into a large greenhouse for cultivation. “I believe that it could be a good thing for a lot of people,” Kinney added.
Cultivation Facility Location
The cannabis cultivation facility is proposed to be located at 3100 Ladnier Road, near the home of Emma Patterson-Carter, who expressed her support for the greenhouse. “Yeah, of course, obviously,” she stated. “I am aware that they probably have doubts with the younger people in the community, but I feel like it’s not fair to deny access to the older people who need it just because of the off chance that they feel like the stigma is too much.”
Medical Benefits of Cannabis
Research indicates numerous benefits of medical marijuana, such as reducing anxiety and inflammation. Medical professionals have noted its potential to aid in combating cancer cells and slowing tumor growth. Kinney, who works at Smoke Screen Vape Store in Gautier, shared positive feedback from customers regarding CBD and Delta-8 products. “People come in all the time telling me it’s great for them and does wonders for them,” he explained. “People’s mental health can improve from it.”
According to city officials, medical marijuana cultivation is permitted only in agricultural or industrial zones, but it can also be authorized in commercial areas with city council approval. This regulatory framework presents a unique opportunity for local businesses and residents alike.
