BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — The Department of Justice announced that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is rolling out federal registrations for state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries.
More than 900 dispensaries across seven states — including here in Mississippi — are receiving the initial round of registrations.
Some Mississippi dispensaries have already gone through the DEA’s initial registration process.
“You can start taxing it. You can make different rulings and stuff like that for it. So that’s kind of the big thing that I’m looking at,” Tanner McDonald, the chief financial officer of Culture Cannabis in Biloxi, said.
Earlier this year, the attorney general placed qualifying medical cannabis under Schedule III controls, which are less restrictive for patients and doctors.
The DEA says it will continue to process applications in phases. Officials are also currently reviewing applications for growers and distributors who supply to dispensaries.
