JACKSON, Miss. — Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI plans to invest $20 billion in a new data center in Southaven, Mississippi, as announced by Gov. Tate Reeves. This investment marks the largest private financial commitment in the state’s history.
Data Center Development in DeSoto County
The facility, named MACROHARDRR, will be located in DeSoto County, near Memphis, Tennessee, and will be the third data center established by xAI in the greater Memphis area. According to xAI CFO Anthony Armstrong, the complex will feature “the world’s largest supercomputer” with 2 gigawatts of computing power.
Community Concerns About Environmental Impact
The announcement has drawn attention as xAI faces scrutiny over its operations in the Memphis vicinity. The NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have expressed concerns regarding the air pollution associated with xAI’s supercomputer facility, particularly affecting predominantly Black neighborhoods in Memphis. A petition initiated by the Safe and Sound Coalition, a local group opposed to xAI’s developments, has gathered over 900 signatures calling for the halt of xAI’s operations in the area.
xAI has not responded to inquiries regarding the environmental concerns raised. However, a fact sheet released by the governor’s office asserts that environmental responsibility is a foundational commitment for xAI.
Economic Implications for Mississippi
During the announcement, Gov. Reeves expressed gratitude to Musk and predicted that the investment would create hundreds of permanent jobs, along with thousands of indirect subcontracting positions. Additionally, the financial boost is expected to enhance tax revenues that can support public services.
In alignment with incentives for data centers introduced in 2024, the state will waive all sales, corporate income, and franchise taxes related to xAI’s development. While the potential savings on sales taxes for the computing power acquired by xAI may amount to significant revenue, the Mississippi Development Authority did not provide immediate responses regarding the specific tax concessions involved.
Both DeSoto County and the city of Southaven have also agreed to offer significantly reduced property taxes for xAI’s development. Operations at the data center in Southaven are anticipated to begin next month.
