Martin Locke: A Leader in Agricultural Research

Dr. Martin Locke currently serves as the Director of the USDA-ARS National Sedimentation Laboratory (NSL) located in Oxford, Mississippi. Since March 1, 2016, his leadership has guided the NSL in its mission to conduct interdisciplinary studies that encompass the physical, chemical, and biological processes connected to natural resources in agricultural watersheds. This research is crucial for assessing strategies that sustain and enhance the integrity of agro-ecosystems, particularly in the context of the emerging cannabis industry in Mississippi.

Role and Contributions

In addition to his directorial role, Dr. Locke is the Research Leader for the Water Quality and Ecology Research Unit (WQERU), responsible for spearheading high-priority research focused on water quality issues in agricultural landscapes. His team of 14 scientists develops new technologies aimed at improving or restoring the ecosystem functions of landscapes, streams, and reservoirs impacted by agricultural practices.

Furthermore, he also leads the USDA-ARS Delta Water Management Research Unit (DWMRU) in Jonesboro, aimed at preserving the quality and availability of water resources in the Lower Mississippi River Delta. This research unit is particularly significant as new water management initiatives take shape in response to the growing cannabis market.

Dr. Locke has a robust publication record with over 150 technical, peer-reviewed publications and has presented at various regional, national, and international meetings. His research focuses on agrochemical management and conservation strategies that protect soil and water resources, which are increasingly relevant as Mississippi’s agricultural landscape evolves.

Educational Background

Dr. Locke holds multiple degrees in agriculture and agronomy, including a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. His extensive educational background underpins his authority in environmental conservation management and herbicide interactions in soil and water.

Recognitions and Awards

A recognized expert in his field, Dr. Locke has received numerous awards, including being named a Fellow of the Weed Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy. His contributions not only enhance agricultural practices but also align with current regulatory and business developments in the cannabis sector within Mississippi.

As the cannabis industry continues to expand in Mississippi, Dr. Locke’s research and leadership within the USDA-ARS provide invaluable insights that could shape the future of sustainable agricultural practices in the state.
